This is in fact the third recording by Second Hand, one of the UK’s most admired underground bands. Recorded while they were auditioning for a guitarist, it has a loose, improvisational freak-out feel, albeit with plenty of their trademark intensity. Originally issued in a tiny run in December 1971, it’s presented here in its definitive form, remastered from original tapes, with a packed booklet offering rare photographs, detailed liner notes and an introduction from its producer, the legendary Vic Keary.

Extra Life is the primary musical vehicle for Charlie Looker, singer, guitarist and composer, who has become one of the most intense and respected voices in the New York experimental underground. For years Looker was a core member of legendary brutal chamber ensemble Zs and has also worked with diverse artists such as Dirty Projectors, Glenn Branca, William Parker and the S.E.M. Ensemble. Formed in 2007, Extra Life combines elements of Medieval chant, metallic hardcore, dark neofolk, abstract modernism and lush pop. In 2009, Extra Life did a month-long European tour, playing festivals including Primavera Sound (Barcelona), Villette Sonique (France), Kilbi (Switzerland) and Moers (Germany) and sharing bills with Sonic Youth, Sunn 0))), My Bloody Valentine and Deerhunter. In June 2010 Extra Life’s sophomore album Made Flesh will be released by Africantaoe (Vinyl Version) – CD version was already available on Loaf Recordings since march 2010. Both more accessible and more severe than their previous work, the record extends from fragile acoustic ballads to industrial symphonic assaults. This dramatic spectrum sets the stage for an epic lyrical meditation on themes of masculinity, power, eroticism, the body, death and mysticism. Recorded by art-metal guru Colin Marston (Krallice, Behold the Arctopus) in collaboration with Extra Life’s own Caley Monahon-Ward, the sound of Made Flesh deepens the band’s signature heaviness while also exploring more psychedelic studio treatments, electronic textures and synths.

This beautiful album from 1973..is a second album. Their first being a Classic in the early prog/rock category. Rod Evans (first singer in Deep Purple,way back.) doing a beautiful job. Lee Dorman on bass (ex-Iron butterfly) Rhino (ex-Iron Butterfly)on guitars an a few other guy´s makes this a fantastic psych/prog album. Wonderfull songs...dreamy arrangements....a great album reissued as a one off ULTRA LIMITED Vinyl pressing!

The recordings were originally meant as a demo for getting live gigs. It also features some violin from Philippe de Chaffoy (who had his own recording studio, where, since the 70s, some musicians like Patrick Conrad, Walter De Buck, recorded some album ; Philippe also worked with Rolan quiet a long time) on the opening track, Dave Foster on bass, and also mando-strat, keyboard/cello arrangement on two tracks. Many people were convinced that the core of Bob’s music does not really need much more than guitar and voice. “Lady don’t go” comes close to Roy Harper. “A moment’s Respite” is an alternative of guitar with keyboards to the way the Lawrence Woolfe project sounded on the now deleted CD "Bridging the Silence". An instrumental like “Flux and Flow” shows equal expressiveness to songs. This song collection contains many of Bob’s classics, many of my favourites. The songtext of “What are you doing tonight”, about romantic longing within an environmental artifiality and alienation, reminds in that context of one of Ann Clarck’s early poetry songs where she wrote about the superficiality of people when going out. Songs like "Same old story",, "only what you think you are" and "heart beat" and the instrumentals refer clezrly to the 70s singer-songwriter genre (songs with guitar) in which Bob is rooted in. In general the LP is a very good starter because it shows Bob Theil who he is with his general core expression, in a timeless context.
